Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate ( CAS 97-90-5 ), commonly abbreviated as EGDMA, is a bifunctional methacrylate monomer used as a crosslinking agent in polymer systems. It forms covalent bridges between polymer chains, improving mechanical strength, solvent resistance, and dimensional stability in cured networks for industrial use. In acrylic and methacrylic resin systems, EGDMA controls network density, allowing formulators to tune hardness and swelling behavior in contact lenses and dental composites. Adhesive and sealant manufacturers incorporate it to enhance cohesive strength and chemical resistance in structural bonding applications and specialty optical materials. UV-curable coatings for printing and packaging rely on EGDMA to accelerate cure response and improve surface hardness on films, labels, and flexible substrates. It also functions as a crosslinker in suspension and emulsion polymerization to produce ion-exchange resins and controlled-release polymer beads for filtration. EGDMA is supplied as a clear liquid, typically stabilized with a polymerization inhibitor such as MEHQ for safe storage and transport in various environments.
