Description

1,3-Butyleneglycol dimethacrylate (CAS 1189-08-8 ), also referenced in procurement as BGDMA, is a bifunctional methacrylate monomer used as a crosslinker and reactive diluent in polymer systems. It introduces covalent network formation during curing, improving hardness, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability in finished materials. In UV- and peroxide-cured coatings, it acts as a crosslinking comonomer. This monomer controls cure speed and final film hardness without requiring solvent. Adhesive and sealant formulators incorporate it to build cohesive strength and improve resistance to solvents and elevated temperatures. In printing inks, particularly energy-curable systems, it reduces viscosity while contributing to network density. This enables faster press speeds and sharper print definition in industrial applications. Polymer and resin manufacturers also use it as a building block for acrylic sheet and dental composites. It is essential for specialty molding compounds where controlled crosslink density is a key performance variable. The product is supplied as a clear liquid, typically with an inhibitor added to prevent premature polymerization during storage and transport. Technical grade is the standard commercial offering for industrial use. Purity levels are commonly at 97% or higher for this chemical. Bulk quantities are available in drums and IBC containers, with smaller packaging options for laboratory and formulation development use.
