4-tert-butylcatechol (CAS 98-29-3 ), commonly known as TBC or Synox TBC, is an industrial antioxidant and polymerization inhibitor used across polymer, monomer, and chemical manufacturing. It prevents premature crosslinking and oxidative degradation during storage, transport, and processing of reactive chemical systems. This chemical is the inhibitor of choice for stabilizing vinyl monomers. It is used for styrene, butadiene, and acrylates during bulk storage and pipeline transfer, where uninhibited polymerization would cause costly blockages and product loss in industrial systems. In coatings and adhesive formulations, it extends shelf life by suppressing oxidative cure before application. Rubber and elastomer producers use it to control premature vulcanization and maintain processability. At lower concentrations, it functions as an antioxidant in lubricant and metalworking fluid formulations. It protects base stocks from oxidative breakdown under high-temperature service conditions.
