Description

Dimethyl sulfate ( CAS 77-78-1 ), commonly abbreviated as DMS, is a highly reactive methylating agent used across pharmaceutical synthesis and specialty chemical manufacturing. It transfers methyl groups to a wide range of substrates including amines, phenols, carboxylic acids, and thiols. This makes it one of the most efficient alkylating reagents available at industrial scale. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, DMS is used to methylate active pharmaceutical ingredient intermediates, enabling the synthesis of analgesics, antihistamines, and cardiovascular compounds. Agrochemical producers rely on it to produce herbicides and pesticides where N- or O-methylation is a critical synthetic step. In the dye and textile industry, it methylates intermediates used in the production of cationic and reactive dyes. Specialty chemical formulators also use DMS to produce quaternary ammonium compounds and methyl esters for use in surfactant and fragrance synthesis. This versatility makes it a staple reagent for complex organic synthesis and large-scale chemical production. Dimethyl sulfate is supplied as a colorless to pale yellow liquid in drum and IBC quantities suited to industrial consumption. Technical grade is the standard commercial specification, with purity typically at 99% or above for most industrial applications. Procurement is handled through licensed chemical distributors given the regulatory controls governing its handling and transport. Strict adherence to safety protocols is required during the storage and transfer of this high-purity methylating agent. Contact us for supply of Dimethyl sulfate Request Quote
