Description

Sodium stannate trihydrate (CAS 12027-70-2 ), also sold as sodium stannate, is an inorganic tin salt used industrially as a corrosion inhibitor, flame retardant additive, and surface treatment agent. It functions by depositing tin-based compounds onto substrates or into formulations to modify surface chemistry and improve material performance across various industrial sectors. In electroplating and electronics manufacturing, it serves as a tin source in alkaline plating baths, producing uniform, solderable tin coatings on metal components and circuits. Textile processors apply it as a mordant and flame-retardant treatment for natural fibers, particularly wool, improving both dye fixation and fire resistance in a single process step. In water treatment, it acts as a corrosion inhibitor for metal pipework and industrial cooling systems. Paper and packaging manufacturers use it as a surface sizing agent. In specialty coatings, controlled tin deposition improves barrier properties. Sodium stannate trihydrate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granular solid for easy handling. Technical and industrial grades are the most common commercial forms, with purity levels typically specified at 95% or higher to ensure consistent performance in chemical processes. Packaging ranges from small drums to bulk quantities depending on application volume requirements. Proper storage in a cool, dry environment is recommended to maintain product stability.
