Polydimethylsiloxane
Description
Polydimethylsiloxane ( CAS 9016-00-6 ), commonly known as PDMS, is a silicone-based polymer used across industrial and consumer manufacturing as a defoamer, lubricant, and surface modifier. Its thermal stability and low surface tension make it a preferred base material and functional additive in formulations where conventional organics fall short in performance. In coatings and sealants, PDMS controls surface flow, improves leveling, and prevents cratering in both solvent-borne and waterborne systems for high-quality finishes. Automotive and aerospace manufacturers use it as a mold release agent and component lubricant, reducing friction in assemblies and extending the overall tooling life. Personal care formulators incorporate PDMS into skin creams, hair conditioners, and antiperspirants to deliver slip, spreadability, and a desirable non-greasy skin feel. In plastics processing, it functions as an internal or external lubricant and plasticizer, improving mold release and reducing surface defects in extruded or injection-molded parts. PDMS is supplied as a clear viscous fluid, with viscosity grades ranging from low to ultra-high to suit different processing requirements and specific industrial needs. Emulsion and compound forms are available for waterborne applications. Grades include cosmetic quality, food-contact compliant, and technical-grade for industrial use.
