Soy protein isolate
Description
Soy protein isolate (SPI, CAS 9010-10-0 ), also sold as isolated soya protein, is a highly refined plant-derived protein fraction extracted from defatted soybean meal. With a protein content typically above 90% on a dry basis, it functions as a functional protein ingredient across food manufacturing, animal nutrition, and personal care formulation. In processed meat, dairy alternatives, and plant-based products, SPI provides emulsification, water-binding, and textural structure, directly influencing yield and mouthfeel in the finished product. Beverage and nutritional supplement manufacturers use it as a primary protein source in protein powders, meal replacements, and infant formula bases for various consumer markets. In animal feed, particularly aquafeed and pet food, it replaces fishmeal as a digestible, high-protein binder. Personal care formulators incorporate SPI into hair conditioning treatments. It is also used in skin-care products where it improves moisture retention and film formation on the substrate. The material is supplied as a fine off-white to cream powder. Standard grades include food-grade meeting FCC specifications, feed-grade, and non-GMO or organic-certified variants that command distinct and specialized supply chains. Functional sub-grades such as emulsifying, gelling, or dispersible types are differentiated by manufacturers to match specific processing requirements and industrial applications.
