Description

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (CAS 9003-39-8 ), commercially known as povidone or PVP, is a synthetic water-soluble polymer used across pharmaceutical, food, and personal care manufacturing. Approved as a food additive under E1201 , it functions primarily as a binder, film former, and stabilizing agent in finished product formulations for various industrial applications. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, PVP is a standard tablet binder and also used as a solubilizer to improve bioavailability of poorly soluble active ingredients in solid dosage forms. Personal care formulators rely on it as a film-forming agent in hair sprays, styling gels, and contact lens solutions where controlled hold and clarity are required for the consumer. In the food industry, E1201 is approved for use as a clarifying and stabilizing agent in beverages, particularly wine and beer processing to ensure product quality and shelf stability. Textile and paper industries use PVP to improve dye uptake and surface adhesion during finishing operations, providing consistent results across large-scale manufacturing batches. PVP is supplied as a white to off-white powder or as aqueous solution concentrates. It is available in multiple molecular weight grades with K-value indicating viscosity and chain length. Recognized grades include USP , Ph.Eur. , FCC , and technical, supporting sourcing across regulated and industrial end markets for global distribution and compliance.
