Polyvinyl alcohol (CAS 9002-89-5 ), commonly abbreviated as PVA or PVOH, is a water-soluble synthetic polymer produced by hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate. It functions as a film-former, binder, and emulsion stabilizer across a broad range of industrial processes. Approved as E1203 in food-contact and pharmaceutical applications, it is a versatile material. In textile sizing, PVA is applied to warp yarns to reduce breakage during weaving, then washed out cleanly after processing. This clean removal is a critical factor for mills managing effluent compliance. Paper and board manufacturers use it as a surface sizing agent and pigment binder to improve printability and surface strength during the production cycle. In construction, PVA is a key binder in tile adhesives, cement renders, and gypsum-based compounds. It effectively controls rheology and improves adhesion to substrates, ensuring long-term structural integrity for building materials. Packaging converters rely on PVA films for water-soluble pouches used in detergent unit-dose formats and agrochemical sachets. This application highlights the polymer's unique ability to dissolve completely in aqueous environments.
