Description
Polyvinyl butyrals (CAS 63148-65-2 ), commonly known as PVB, are thermoplastic resins produced by reacting polyvinyl alcohol with butyraldehyde. Commercially recognized under designations such as VL 023, these resins are used across coatings, adhesives, and laminating applications. They are valued where strong substrate adhesion, flexibility, and film-forming performance are required. In automotive and architectural glazing, PVB is the standard interlayer resin in laminated safety glass, bonding glass plies while absorbing impact energy. Coatings formulators incorporate it into wash primers and metal primers, where its adhesion to bare metal surfaces outperforms many alternative binders. In printing inks, particularly gravure and flexographic systems, it acts as a binder resin. The material controls viscosity, pigment dispersion, and adhesion to film substrates. Adhesive and sealant manufacturers also use it as a film-forming base in structural bonding applications for wood, leather, and textile substrates. PVB is supplied as a white to off-white powder in varying molecular weights and degrees of acetalization. These factors directly affect solubility and film properties relevant to grade selection for industrial formulations. Standard commercial grades are differentiated by viscosity and hydroxyl content to suit specific coating, ink, or laminating end uses. Technical-grade material is the predominant market form for most chemical suppliers. Some suppliers offer grades qualified to specific OEM or industry specifications. This ensures the resin meets the rigorous demands of high-performance manufacturing environments and specialized chemical processing applications.
