Description

2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate (CAS 818-61-1 ), commonly abbreviated as HEA, is a reactive hydroxyl-functional monomer used to introduce pendant hydroxyl groups into polymer backbones. Ethylene glycol monoacrylate is a recognized alternative name in some supplier and regulatory contexts. It enables controlled crosslinking and adhesion performance in UV-curable and thermally cured polymer systems. In UV-curable coatings and inks for printing and packaging, HEA acts as a reactive diluent that reduces viscosity while contributing hydroxyl functionality to the cured network. Adhesive and sealant formulators incorporate it into acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives to tune peel strength and cohesion through isocyanate or melamine crosslinking. In waterborne and solvent-based coatings, it serves as a comonomer to improve substrate adhesion and coating flexibility without sacrificing crosslink density. Polymer manufacturers also use HEA to functionalize acrylic resins destined for two-component polyurethane systems. HEA is supplied as a clear liquid, typically stabilized with a polymerization inhibitor. This stabilization helps maintain shelf stability during storage and transport. It is available in technical and industrial grades, with purity specifications commonly at 96% or higher. Bulk quantities are offered in drums and IBC containers, with inhibitor type and concentration often specified on request to suit downstream processing requirements.
