Description
Tetraethyl silicate (CAS 78-10-4 ), commonly known as TEOS or ethyl silicate, is a silicon alkoxide used as a reactive binder, crosslinker, and silica precursor across industrial and specialty chemical applications. On hydrolysis, it deposits amorphous silica, enabling durable surface treatments, protective coatings, and ceramic structures without requiring high-temperature sintering. In zinc-rich and inorganic coatings, it acts as the silicate binder. This material cures at ambient temperature to form hard, corrosion-resistant films on steel structures and industrial equipment. Semiconductor and display manufacturers use it as a CVD/sol-gel precursor to deposit silicon dioxide dielectric layers. In building and construction, it consolidates porous stone, concrete, and masonry by penetrating the substrate. It forms a silica network that restores structural integrity and protects against environmental degradation over time. Formulators of heat-resistant adhesives and sealants incorporate it as a crosslinking agent to improve thermal stability. This enhances adhesion to glass and metal surfaces in demanding industrial environments and high-heat applications. Tetraethyl silicate is supplied as a clear liquid, available in both pure form and as partially pre-hydrolyzed grades. Most notably, Ethyl Silicate 40 offers higher silica content for specialized coating applications. Standard purity grades range from technical to high-purity electronic grade for semiconductor use.
