Description

Calcium disodium edetate hydrate (CAS 23411-34-9 ) is the hydrated crystalline form of calcium disodium EDTA, a chelating agent used across food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. It works by binding free metal ions that would otherwise catalyze oxidative degradation. In food processing, it is incorporated into canned vegetables, legumes, mayonnaise, and salad dressings to prevent metal-catalyzed discoloration and rancidity. This extends shelf life without altering the flavor profile of the finished product. Pharmaceutical formulators use it to stabilize liquid drug products, ophthalmic solutions, and topical preparations where trace metal contamination threatens active ingredient integrity. It ensures the long-term stability of sensitive medicinal compounds. It also functions as a sequestrant in personal care formulations, preventing soap scum formation and improving preservative efficacy. It achieves this by stripping metal cofactors from microbial cell walls during the preservation process. Industrial cleaning and water treatment applications rely on it to control scale-forming metal ions in process systems. This prevents the buildup of mineral deposits that can damage equipment or reduce the efficiency of industrial operations. Calcium disodium edetate hydrate is supplied as a white crystalline powder. It is available in food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade specifications, with the pharmaceutical form commonly meeting USP , BP , and Ph. Eur. standards. Packaging ranges from laboratory quantities to bulk industrial volumes depending on the grade and supplier. This versatility allows for its use in both small-scale research and large-scale manufacturing environments across various sectors.
