Cryolite
Description
Cryolite (CAS 15096-52-3 ), also sold under the trade name Cryocide, is a synthetic sodium aluminum fluoride mineral used primarily as a flux and electrolyte medium in industrial processing. Commercially produced to replace the now-depleted natural mineral deposits, it is a critical input in aluminum smelting and select agrochemical and abrasive applications. In primary aluminum production, cryolite functions as the molten bath electrolyte in Hall-Héroult cells, dissolving alumina at high temperatures to enable electrochemical reduction into metal. This functionality makes it indispensable to smelter operations. Abrasive product manufacturers incorporate it as a filler and grinding aid in resin-bonded grinding wheels and coated abrasives. In these applications, it improves cut rate and extends wheel life. In the pulp and paper industry, it is used as an opacifying agent and filler to improve sheet brightness and printability. Historically applied as an insecticide under the Cryocide trade name, it remains a registered pesticide active ingredient in certain markets for control of chewing insects on crops. Cryolite is supplied as a fine white powder in bulk, supersacks, and bagged formats. Technical and metallurgical grades are the most common, with purity specifications typically aligned to industry standards. Pesticide-grade material is available in select markets where regulatory approvals are maintained.
