Description

Molybdenum disulfide (CAS 1317-33-5 ), commonly identified by the shorthand MoS2, is a naturally occurring inorganic sulfide mineral processed into fine powder for industrial use. It functions as a solid-state lubricant and surface modifier, reducing friction and wear between moving metal surfaces without relying on liquid carrier systems. In metalworking and heavy machinery, MoS2 is compounded into greases, pastes, and dry-film lubricants to protect high-load, high-temperature bearing surfaces where conventional oils fail. Coatings formulators incorporate it into anti-friction coatings applied to fasteners, gears, and aerospace components, where bonded dry-film performance is critical for the application. In rubber and elastomer compounding, it improves surface slip and reduces mold adhesion during processing. Cosmetic formulators use MoS2 as a pigment and slip agent in pressed powders. In color cosmetics, its dark gray tone and platelet structure contribute to texture and coverage. Molybdenum disulfide is supplied as a fine to ultrafine black-gray powder. Particle size is a key specification that determines suitability across lubrication, coating, and cosmetic applications. Technical and industrial grades are standard for lubricant use. Cosmetic-grade material is available for personal care applications. Purity levels and particle size distribution are the primary differentiators between commercial offerings.
