Description
Bismuth trioxide (CAS 1304-76-3 ), commonly referenced by its formula Bi2O3, is an inorganic bismuth compound used as a functional additive and raw material across electronics manufacturing and specialty materials production. It serves as a key oxide source where controlled melting behavior, high refractive index contribution, or dense inorganic pigmentation is required for industrial applications and chemical synthesis. In electronics, Bi2O3 is incorporated into low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC), varistors, and dielectric formulations, where it lowers sintering temperatures and modifies electrical properties in finished components. Specialty glass manufacturers use it to produce radiation-shielding glass and optical glass with elevated density and refractive characteristics, acting as a direct substitute for lead oxide in many formulations. In printing and packaging, it functions as a yellow-to-orange inorganic pigment in ceramic inks and decorative coatings applied to glass and ceramic substrates for high-durability finishes. It also enters flux compositions and soldering materials where a bismuth oxide source with defined purity is required.
