Description

Bismuth subnitrate (CAS 1304-85-4 ), also sold under the designations basic bismuth nitrate and bismuth hydroxide nitrate oxide, is an inorganic bismuth salt used across pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturing. It functions primarily as a buffering and opacifying agent, contributing to product stability and texture in finished formulations. In pharmaceutical manufacturing, it is incorporated into antacid and gastrointestinal preparations. Its buffering capacity helps neutralize excess stomach acid in solid dosage forms. Topical pharmaceutical products, including dusting powders and wound dressings, use it as an astringent and protective agent on skin and mucous membranes. In cosmetics, it serves as an opacifier and whitening pigment in face powders, foundations, and skin-care creams where a matte or brightening finish is required for the final consumer product. Industrial ceramic and glass applications also source this chemical as a precursor for bismuth oxide production.
