Description

Methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CAS 5039-78-1 ), commercially known as METAC, is a cationic quaternary ammonium monomer used as a reactive building block in polymer synthesis. It introduces permanent positive charge into polymer chains, enabling the production of cationic polyelectrolytes and functional coatings across multiple industrial sectors. In paper manufacturing, METAC-based polymers function as retention aids and wet-strength additives, improving fiber bonding and filler retention during sheet formation. Textile processors use cationic polymers derived from METAC to improve dye uptake and substrate adhesion on negatively charged fibers during the manufacturing process. In leather processing, it contributes to the formulation of cationic fixatives and surface treatment agents that enhance finish durability and overall product quality. The plastics and polymers sector uses METAC as a comonomer in superabsorbent polymer networks and antistatic coatings where its quaternary nitrogen group provides permanent charge. METAC is supplied as an aqueous solution, typically at concentrations of 75–80% active content. It is available in technical grade for industrial polymerization applications. Packaging ranges from drums to IBC totes, suited to bulk procurement requirements in polymer manufacturing operations and large scale chemical distribution networks.
