Sodium aminotris(methylenephosphonate) (CAS 20592-85-2 ), commercially known as ATMP-4Na, is a phosphonate-based chelating agent used across industrial water systems and process chemistry. It controls scale deposition and inhibits corrosion by sequestering calcium, magnesium, and heavy metal ions that would otherwise foul equipment or pipelines during operations. In water treatment, it is dosed into cooling towers, boilers, and reverse osmosis systems to prevent carbonate and sulfate scale buildup on heat exchange surfaces and membranes. Oil and gas producers use it in injection water and produced water circuits to protect downhole equipment and surface pipelines from mineral scaling under high-temperature conditions. Textile and paper mills incorporate it into process baths to deactivate hardness ions that would otherwise interfere with dyeing uniformity or bleaching efficiency in the plant. In construction chemical formulations, it functions as a retarder and stabilizer in cement and gypsum-based systems, extending workability time for contractors and builders.
