Description

Sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate (CAS 149-44-0 ), also sold under trade names Aldanil, Discolite, and Formopan, is a reducing agent and bleaching compound used across textile, paper, and water treatment industries. Commonly abbreviated as SFS, it functions as a chemical reductant capable of stripping color and neutralizing oxidizing agents in industrial processes. In textile dyeing and finishing, it is used as a discharge agent. This compound allows manufacturers to selectively remove or reduce dye from fabric, enabling precise pattern bleaching without damaging fiber structure. Pulp and paper manufacturers apply it to brighten pulp and reduce residual color. In leather processing, it serves as a reducing bleach to even out hide coloration prior to dyeing. Water treatment operations use SFS to neutralize excess chlorine and other oxidants in effluent streams before discharge. Sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate is supplied as a white crystalline powder or granules. Standard commercial grades include technical grade for industrial bleaching and reduction applications. Supply is typically offered in moisture-resistant packaging due to the compound's sensitivity to humid storage conditions, with bulk and drummed formats available for industrial procurement.
