Description

Ricinoleic acid (CAS 141-22-0 ), also known as ricinolic acid, is the principal fatty acid derived from castor oil, accounting for approximately 85–90% of its composition. It functions as a reactive intermediate, emulsifier, and surface-active agent across a broad range of industrial and personal care applications. In lubricants and metalworking fluids, it acts as a base component. Sulfated and ethoxylated derivatives improve lubricity and metal surface protection. Coatings and adhesive formulators use it as a reactive plasticizer and adhesion promoter, particularly in polyurethane systems. Its hydroxyl group enables direct polymer chain incorporation. The textile and leather industries rely on it for fiber softening, fat liquoring agents, and surface conditioning treatments that improve flexibility. In personal care, it functions as an emollient and emulsifier in lipstick bases, skin creams, and hair conditioners where its skin-compatible profile supports stable oil-in-water formulations. Ricinoleic acid is supplied as a pale yellow to amber liquid, typically derived from the saponification and acidulation of castor oil. It is available in technical and cosmetic grades. Purity levels commonly range from 80% to 95%+ depending on the application. Bulk liquid supply in drums and ISO tanks is standard for industrial procurement and large-scale manufacturing needs.
