gamma-butyrolactone
Description
Gamma-butyrolactone ( CAS 96-48-0 ), commonly referred to as GBL, is a high-boiling cyclic solvent used across pharmaceutical manufacturing, electronics, and polymer processing. Its solvency profile makes it a preferred carrier for demanding formulations where conventional solvents fall short. In pharmaceutical synthesis, GBL functions as a reaction solvent. It is an intermediate in the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients and specialty chemicals. Electronics manufacturers use it to strip and clean circuit boards and semiconductor components. Residue-free evaporation is critical to process yield in these applications. Polymer and resin producers rely on it to dissolve engineering plastics and as a monomer precursor. It is used in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) synthesis. In printing and packaging, it is incorporated into high-performance ink formulations requiring strong substrate adhesion. Controlled drying behavior is a key benefit of this chemical. Gamma-butyrolactone is supplied as a clear liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities for industrial use. Technical grade and pharmaceutical-grade meeting USP and BP standards are the primary commercial specifications available for global distribution. The FEMA 3291 designation supports its use in flavoring applications where regulatory traceability is required for safety and compliance standards.
