Perlite (CAS 93763-70-3 ) is a naturally occurring volcanic glass processed through high-temperature expansion to produce a lightweight, porous mineral used across construction, agriculture, and industrial cleaning. Expanded perlite functions primarily as a filtration aid, insulation material, and rheology modifier in a broad range of formulations and industrial processes. In building and construction, it is incorporated into lightweight plasters. It is used in ceiling tiles and insulating concrete to reduce structural weight while improving thermal performance. Horticultural and agricultural applications rely on perlite as a soil amendment and growing medium component. Its open structure improves aeration and drainage in potting mixes and hydroponic systems. Industrial and household cleaning formulations use perlite as a mild abrasive and thickening agent in scouring powders and surface cleaners. It also serves as a filter aid in food and beverage processing, where it clarifies liquids such as beer, wine, and edible oils by trapping fine particulates. Expanded perlite is supplied as a dry, free-flowing powder. It is available in coarser granular grades depending on the target application. Standard grades include filter-aid grade, horticultural grade, and construction grade, with particle size distribution being the primary differentiator. Food-grade and FCC -compliant grades are available for use in filtration processes within regulated food and beverage production.
