Potassium polyphosphate
Description
Potassium polyphosphate (CAS 68956-75-2 ), also known commercially as Rapisol, is an inorganic polyphosphate salt used across water treatment, food processing, and agricultural applications. It functions primarily as a sequestrant and dispersing agent, binding metal ions and preventing scale formation or unwanted precipitation in complex formulations and industrial systems. In water treatment, it inhibits scale deposition and controls corrosion in distribution systems by sequestering calcium and magnesium ions before they can precipitate. Food processors use it as a sequestrant and stabilizer in processed meats, dairy products, and beverages, where it controls mineral activity and improves texture retention. In agriculture, it serves as a soluble potassium and phosphorus source in liquid fertilizer formulations, delivering nutrients in a form that remains stable in concentrated solutions. Industrial cleaning and detergent formulators incorporate it for its ability to disperse hardness ions and improve the performance of active ingredients in hard water conditions. Potassium polyphosphate is typically supplied as a white powder or granule. Food-grade and technical-grade specifications are the most commonly traded forms. Food-grade material meets standards relevant to direct food contact applications. Bulk supply is standard for industrial buyers, with smaller packaging available for specialty use.
