Quaternium-18 bentonite
Description
Quaternium-18 bentonite (CAS 68953-58-2 ), also known commercially as Bentone 120, is an organically modified clay produced by treating bentonite with a quaternary ammonium compound. This material functions as a rheology modifier in non-aqueous systems, controlling viscosity and preventing settling. It builds a stable gel structure in oil-based formulations for industrial use. In personal care, it thickens and stabilizes anhydrous products such as lipsticks and mascaras. It provides the smooth, non-greasy texture that high-end cosmetic formulations require for performance. Coatings manufacturers use it to prevent pigment settling and sagging in solvent-borne paints. This is particularly critical for maintaining anti-settling performance during long-term storage of industrial coatings. In adhesives and sealants, it builds thixotropic body in solvent-based systems. This allows for controlled application without slump or flow, ensuring the material stays exactly where it is applied. It also functions as a suspending agent in oil-phase systems where uniform dispersion is needed. This ensures that active ingredients or fillers remain evenly distributed throughout the product shelf life. The product is supplied as a fine, off-white to cream-colored powder. It is available in technical and cosmetic grades, with the latter meeting strict purity requirements for personal care applications. Packaging typically ranges from multi-kilogram bags to bulk quantities suited to industrial procurement volumes. This ensures flexible supply chain solutions for manufacturers of all sizes.
