Sulphonated asphalt (CAS 68201-32-1 ), also supplied as sulfonated asphalt sodium salt, is a chemically modified bitumen derivative used primarily as a shale stabilizer and fluid loss control agent in drilling operations. Its ability to seal permeable formations and inhibit clay swelling makes it a critical additive in water-based and oil-based drilling fluid systems. In oil and gas drilling, it reduces fluid invasion into shale formations. This prevents wellbore instability and bit balling during directional and deep-well operations.
