It functions by generating controlled levels of formaldehyde in situ, providing broad-spectrum preservation against bacteria, yeasts, and molds. In coatings and adhesives, it protects water-based systems from microbial spoilage. This includes latex paints and construction adhesives during storage and in-can use. Personal care formulators incorporate it as a preservative in rinse-off and leave-on products such as shampoos, conditioners, and lotions. Consistent antimicrobial efficacy across a broad pH range is a key selection criterion for these applications.
