Description

Silicon carbide (CAS 409-21-2 ), commonly referenced by its abbreviation SiC, is a synthetically produced abrasive and refractory material used across high-temperature and high-wear industrial environments. It delivers exceptional hardness and thermal stability that make it a preferred material in demanding structural and processing applications. In abrasives manufacturing, SiC is used to produce grinding wheels. It is also used for cutting discs, sandpapers, and blasting media for machining hard metals, ceramics, and composites. Refractory producers incorporate it into kiln furniture, furnace linings, and crucibles. These components must withstand extreme thermal cycling without degradation. The electronics and semiconductor industries rely on SiC wafers and substrates for power devices, including inverters and EV drivetrain components. High voltage and high-temperature performance are critical in these sectors. In metallurgy, it functions as a deoxidizer and carbon/silicon additive in steel and cast iron production, improving melt quality. Silicon carbide is supplied as crude material, macrogrits, microgrits, and fine powder, with particle size being the primary specification variable across applications. Established grades include metallurgical-grade. Other grades include refractory-grade and semiconductor-grade, each with distinct purity thresholds. Black SiC and green SiC are the two commercially recognized variants, differentiated by purity level. These variants are selected based on the targeted application. All materials are processed to meet rigorous industrial requirements and ensure consistent performance in heavy-duty manufacturing environments.
