Description

Decanoic acid (CAS 334-48-5 ), commercially known as capric acid, is a medium-chain saturated fatty acid derived primarily from coconut and palm kernel oil. It functions as an emulsifier, lubricant, and surface-active agent across food, personal care, and industrial manufacturing sectors for diverse applications. In food manufacturing, capric acid (FEMA 2364 ) is used as a flavoring agent and emulsification aid in dairy analogs, confectionery coatings, and processed fats. Personal care formulators incorporate it into skin creams and cleansing products, where its medium-chain structure supports moisturizing and emulsification performance. Textile and leather processors use it as a surface modifier and wetting agent to improve fiber treatment and finishing bath penetration during the production cycle. In metalworking and lubricant formulations, it functions as a base component or additive in cutting fluids and release agents to ensure high performance. Decanoic acid is supplied as a white to off-white waxy solid or flake, with liquid form available above its melting point for bulk handling and logistics. Standard commercial grades include food-grade and technical-grade, with purity typically at 98% or higher. FCC -grade material is available for food applications.
