Polymaleic acid (CAS 26099-09-2 ), also supplied as hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride (HPMA) and abbreviated PMA, is a low-molecular-weight polyelectrolyte used across water treatment and industrial process chemistry. It functions primarily as a scale inhibitor, dispersant, and corrosion inhibitor in aqueous systems where mineral deposit control is critical. In cooling water and boiler systems, PMA prevents calcium carbonate scale formation. It also inhibits calcium sulfate and calcium phosphate scale, extending equipment service life and reducing maintenance downtime.
