Description

Behentrimonium chloride (CAS 17301-53-0 ), also known as BTAC, is a quaternary ammonium compound derived from erucic acid. It functions as a cationic conditioning agent and surfactant, providing substantivity to negatively charged surfaces such as hair and textiles. In hair care, BTAC is the primary active in rinse-off conditioners, conditioning masks, and leave-in treatments. It deposits onto damaged or chemically treated hair to reduce static and improve combability during the grooming process. Fabric softeners rely on this compound to impart a soft hand feel to textiles during rinse cycles. In textile processing, it functions as an antistatic and fiber-lubricating agent for synthetic yarns and woven fabrics. Paper manufacturers apply it as a surface modifier to improve wet strength and reduce fiber friction during processing. This versatility makes it a staple ingredient across multiple industrial and consumer chemical sectors. Behentrimonium chloride is commercially supplied as a paste or aqueous dispersion, with active content typically ranging from 70% to 85%. Grades such as Varisoft BT 85 and Quartamin AB represent standard trade specifications. These specifications are used in personal care and industrial formulations globally. Cosmetic-grade material is the most commonly sourced form, with purity and color specifications aligned to personal care manufacturing requirements.
