Description

Vanillin (CAS 121-33-5 ), also sold under the trade name Zimco, is the primary synthetic flavoring compound used to replicate and extend natural vanilla flavor across food, fragrance, and pharmaceutical applications. Derived from guaiacol or lignin, it delivers a consistent, cost-effective alternative to vanilla bean extract at commercial scale. In food and beverage manufacturing, it is used to flavor chocolate and baked goods. It is also essential for dairy products and confectionery where natural vanilla economics are prohibitive. Fragrance formulators incorporate it into personal care products including perfumes, lotions, and soaps. The compound is valued for its warm, sweet base note and fixative effect. Pharmaceutical manufacturers use it as an intermediate in the synthesis of active ingredients, including certain antiviral and cardiovascular compounds. It also serves as a masking agent in oral dosage forms. In printing inks and coatings, it functions as a UV stabilizer, helping protect various substrates from the effects of photodegradation. The product is supplied as a white to off-white crystalline powder. Standard commercial grades include food-grade ( FCC ), pharmaceutical-grade ( USP / BP ), and technical-grade for industrial applications. Packaging typically ranges from 25 kg bags to bulk quantities. Purity specifications are commonly at 99% or higher for regulated applications, ensuring consistency across all manufacturing sectors.
