Description

Dioctyl phthalate (CAS 117-81-7 ), commercially abbreviated as DEHP, is a high-molecular-weight phthalate ester used primarily as a plasticizer to increase flexibility and processability in PVC and other polymer systems. It remains one of the most established general-purpose plasticizers in industrial formulation, valued for its broad compatibility with vinyl resins and low volatility at processing temperatures. In PVC compounding, DEHP is incorporated into flexible films, cables, hoses, and flooring materials where sustained flexibility under mechanical stress is required for long-term performance. The printing and packaging sector uses it as a plasticizer in inks and coatings to prevent cracking and improve adhesion on flexible substrates. It also functions as a solvent and carrier in certain industrial formulations. In adhesives and sealants, it aids dispersion and controls viscosity during processing. In legacy personal care and cosmetic formulations, DEHP has been used as a film-forming aid and solvent in nail products. Regulatory restrictions have significantly reduced its use in the cosmetic sector. Dioctyl phthalate is supplied as a clear, oily liquid in drums, IBCs, and bulk tanker quantities for industrial use. Technical grade is the standard commercial specification for industrial plasticizer applications. Buyers should confirm regional regulatory compliance requirements before sourcing this chemical. DEHP is subject to restriction under REACH and other frameworks in certain end-use categories. Proper handling and storage protocols must be followed to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
